As the first resort built on Waikiki beach, the Moana hotel opened its magnificent doors to the public on March 11, 1901. The main building of the hotel, its Banyan Wing, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The hotel has its own Historical Room, with display cases featuring photographs and other nostalgic memorabilia from the early 1900s. The famous Moana Banyan tree was planted in 1904 and is listed on Hawaii’s Rare and Exceptional Tree list, protecting it under state law. When last measured, the Banyan tree spanned 150-feet across and 75-feet high.
